Spring and summer

Generally speaking, spring is one of the best times to sell a car, particularly if you have a convertible. As the weather heats up, buyers are drawn to convertible models to make the most of the spring and summer weather. There’s also the fact that registration plates change in March, so fewer people buy cars before then. The best types of cars to sell in spring include convertibles, roadsters and sports cars. You can ask for a higher price for these types of models if you sell in the springtime.

Summer on the other hand, is one of the worst times to sell. People are more focused on heading off on holiday and enjoying lazy summer days with the family. June and July aren’t overly bad, but August sees the lowest car sales of the year, particularly for 4×4 models.

Autumn and winter

Autumn is another slow period for car sales, unless you’re selling fleet vehicles. Many dealerships part-exchange their fleet vehicles in the autumn, giving buyers the opportunity to bag a bargain. However, if you are looking to sell, the best models to advertise in the autumn are crossover vehicles with decent fuel economy in time for winter.

Like summer, winter isn’t a great month to sell. With Christmas and New Year, buyers are saving their money over winter. However, there are some models and brands which will typically sell no matter what time of year it is. Dealerships and auto companies such as the AA for example, notice brands such as Ford sell well all year round. This means it’s worth doing a little research to see just how popular your car is.

So, when it comes to which time of year it’s better to sell, Spring does appear to be the ideal time. Of course, that doesn’t mean to say your car won’t sell if you advertise it during other times of the year, it just may take a little longer or bring a slightly lower price. Therefore, being aware of how the seasons do impact car sales is useful if you’re looking to get the best deal for your used car.
